Great Expectations: Spring into Stressors
The transition from winter to spring brings a sense of renewal for many. But the fickle swings of cold and warmth does the exact opposite for others.
As Charles Dickens artfully expressed in Great Expectations, “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.”
A phenomenon termed the springtime blues describes what happens when there is a general expectation for better things with the change in seasons which is not realized. The shift in sunlight patterns coupled with the implementation of Daylight Savings Time, can lead to issues with sleeping. And seasonal allergies brought on by the release of pollen by our plant friends can amplify these issues.
All of these factors can lead to worsening of depression, anxiety, and introduce an unexpected but persistent source of stress that can physiologically impact our bodies. Treatment requests for so-called sensitive skin, susceptibility to inflammatory reactions and worsening of existing inflammatory conditions, has been reported in one study to be highest in March and April.
With respect to the totality of skin (inside and out), conditions such as temporomandibular joint discomfort, atopic dermatitis and even psoriasis are likely to erupt with this seasonal transition.
But rest assured, approaches to mitigate those interruptions in our daily routine have been introduced and innovative approaches remain to be explored in the medical research community.
We will specifically review those changes in the skin and the underlying architecture that come about with stress in our next installment.
Embrace the warmer weather and sunscreen liberally!
