Electropolishing: Why your skin deserves the extra step

What is Electropolishing?

Metal surfaces can have very small bumps or rough areas that are not easily seen by the naked eye. Electropolishing is a special way to make metal surfaces very smooth and clean.

Instead of adding a layer of metal onto a surface like in electroplating, electropolishing removes a thin layer of the metal itself.

How it Works

Each medical grade stainless steel roller is dipped into a special liquid bath called an electrolyte and a current is passed through the liquid bath.

The process preferentially dissolves the tiny peaks and irregularities on the metal surface to smooth out all the microscopic bumps and scratches, especially the sharp points and edges (burrs).

The resulting stainles steel surface is:

  • Significantly smoother than mechanical polishing alone.
  • Ultraclean because surface contaminants are removed.
  • Passivated, having greater resistance to rust and corrosion.
  • Highly Lustrous: It gives the metal a bright, clean, and often very shiny finish.

The Benefits

  • Hygiene: The super-smooth surface makes it much harder for bacteria and other germs to stick or hide in microscopic crevices, making the rollers easier to thoroughly clean and sanitize – crucial for a skincare tool.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Enhancing the passive layer makes the stainless steel even more resistant to potential corrosion from product ingredients or moisture.
  • Feel and Function: The extreme smoothness reduces friction, allowing the rollers to glide effortlessly and comfortably over the skin, providing that gentle massage effect without dragging.
  • Durability: A cleaner, more corrosion-resistant surface can contribute to the overall lifespan of the product.

For the Limited Edition Duo Roller, electropolishing is a key manufacturing step that ensures the stainless steel rollers are not just strong, but also incredibly smooth, hygienic, and resistant to damage, making them ideal for direct contact with skin.
